If you just spent a fortune having your engine rebuilt or do not wish to
spend a fortune having your engine rebuilt
than perhaps you'd be interested
in these inexpensive engine knock monitors:
There are two ways to install
Knocksense
Standalone- The knock sensor connects directly to
Knocksense, independently of existing ECU and ignition control. When ordering
state that it is for a standalone application so that we can supply a single
ended signal cable.
Dual Use- This setup connects Knocksense in
parallel with the original knock sensor transducer that is already in use. For
Volvo and Porsche A "Y" adapter is used to
tap into the knock sensor signal line. Please state for which car are you
ordering because the grounding schemes are different. For other cars Write to us Please mention word
Knock in the subject line.
The electronics sits in a tiny box under the dash.
It contains an active filter that amplifies the knock signal and a comparator
circuit that drives an LED which flashes on every knock event. The flash
intensity is related to the knock intensity. The LED is separate from the box so
that it can be mounted anywhere. The best place for it is just below the pillar
mounted boost gauge. All Wiring is to the poke in
terminal block on the Knocksense unit. There is no soldering necessary. The
internal threshold pot can be set so that it triggers on the desired level of
the knock signal.
You can order the Knocksense unit with "Y" adapter signal cable
end from us for $55 plus S&H ($8 to US, $12 overseas, $10 to
Canada).
If you inted to use Knocksense as a standalone than
order it with a single connector and pay $50

Everything except the knock sensor itself is
included.

KnocksenseMS for Megasquirt and other EMS
Installation docs for various versions of MS.
KnocksenseMS contains the necessary logic interface to signal
to Megasquirt or other EMS unit that a knock event has occurred. There is also a
separate pseudo analog channel that allows capturing the knock event with a data
logger. This signal is up to 5 volts in amplitude for weak signals after which
it increases in width with increasing knock intensity. It can be also strapped
together to the coolant temperature signal line so that both can be monitored on
a single datalog channel. Since the coolant temperature signal is more or less a
straight line allowing sharp knock spikes to be superimposed. This sharing is
designed so that in no way it affects the coolant temperature value under no
knock conditions. The knock indicating LED is included just like in original
Knocksense.
If you do not have Megasquirt
yet, KnocksenseMS can be used as indicate only unit. The output
to control the timing can be connected to Megasquirt at a later date.
In the mean time you still have LED warning.
You can order the KnocksenseMS kit from us for $65USD plus S&H ($8
to US, $12 overseas, $10 to Canada). $22 Expresspost - US & Canada
The
knock sensor shielded cable (9') comes with a two pin Bosch connector wired
to one end.
Red LED comes mounted in a bezel and wired to a length of twisted
pair.

Let us know the board and software source, be it
B&G
Megasquirt or Megasquirt&Spark Extra that you will be
using. There is a
slight variation in supplied documentation.
Also I need know the approximate cylinder bore when ordering. We
tune each
KnocksenseMS filter so that it better matches the engine. This need
not be
exact because the filter is deliberately broad in order account for
the
variance in knock frequency due to dynamic changes in operating
conditions.
